The Scouting goose district activity


A district activity is always a fun way to get to know Scouts from other troops. Organizing a large board game is an easy way to join efforts in a district activity. On this page you will find more information and tips for organizing a large goose (game).

Large Goose (play) Scouts district activity


Global setup:

The big goose district activity consists of an opening ceremony, a round games and a closing ceremony. Upon arrival, each group of participants will receive a pawn that can be something like a sandbox car, an object from the kitchen, or something from a thrift store or flea market. Then the groups are assigned a number. At this number of the goose they'll start playing the game. The circuit runs around: So the highest number is next to number 1. Therefore it does not matter what number you'll start with. The groups throw the dice and move the pawn forward and see if an assignment belongs to that number. If not, then throw the dice again.
When the number is assigned a game, then they'll read the instructions. Some assignments are elsewhere in the grounds, so the game with that number should be sought. The assignment only gives a clue where to look.
One of the assignments is the lemonade break. If you go beyond it, then you may also get lemonade and / or a cookie.
Sometimes you do have to wait because a number is already occupied. This is nice because then you can relax and enjoy the show on stage and see how other groups cope with different assignements (and what kind of quality one might expect when joining a campfire overthere).

Conduct of the activity:

The board game only has a collective moment when everyone starts and a closing ceremony when the game is over. In addition, there is a spot where you can get lemonade.

The opening ceremony

At the start of the game, each group is given a pawn and a number to start the game. The pawn could be brought from the own group as well.

The activities

The activities are partly do-activities and short games like on the clothesline district game. There are also portray-tasks that you must perform on stage at the jury desk. These taks are dealing with expression and drama, like during a campfire. The aim is to return home with a hand full of nice suggestions for keeping a spectacural campfire at your own troop.
The portray-tasks vary from sing a song with the letter ... for the jury and take this begin of al tale and perform a small theater piece to depict a masterpiece by Rembrandt van Rijn, tell what's on the painting to see. Don't forget the border around the painting for everyone who is still afraid of performing on stage, but already does like to participate on stage. For each portay-task one get points from the judges. (The aim is practicing how to have a nice campfire. And improve the level of performance at the campfire in the troops.)

The closing ceremony

At the end of the game will be reveiled which groups have obtained the most points from the jury. The winner is challenged to reperform the winning act, the one which the jury could appreciate most, for everyone. Maybe the jury does participate themselfs in the winning act, who knows? After that each group will receive a souvenir, everyone can go home again, and the clean-up crew can pack up the equipment afterwards.


The games:

For the activity are many simple games required you can play with groups of about 7 youth members. Additionally, some portray and expression tasks you can do on a stage are needed. In case one must wait for a game because it is busy, one can now enjoy the performances of other groups.
